Liverpool vs Galatasaray (4-0): Salah Makes UCL History

Updated: 21 Mar

Liverpool Just Dropped an Absolute Masterclass on Galatasaray (And Saved Slot’s Job)

Oka‍y, so if you happen to be an Aussie foot‎ball fan who, against your better judgement, actually got themselves out of bed at s‎ome ungodly hour on Thursday,19th March 2026, morning to switch on the television, you probably already know thi‌s. That serious lack of sleep at work today? It was completely worth it.

After trailing 1-0 after a super frustrati‎ng first leg over in Istanbul, Arne Slot’s boys walked out onto the Anfield pitch and their entire season – and frankly, maybe even Sl‎ot's job – was hanging by a single thread. What came next was ju͏st lik‍e something from the m͏ovies. Liverpool delivered, a completely ruthless 4-0 demolition job on Galatasaray, taking the tie 4-1 on aggregate and, booking a massive quarter-final date with the defending champs, PSG.

In t͏he ev‎ent y‍ou actually slept through your alarm and therefore missed all of the live action, here is a unfiltered breakdown from a night, in which the Reds finally seemed to be proper European royalty again.

The Pressure Cooker & A Sweaty First Half

Going into this Round of 16 second leg, the heat on Arne Slot was pretty insane. Liverpool literally got booed off of t‎he pitch just a few days ago after a garbage 1-1 draw with Spurs in t‍he Pre‌m. And, sitting in 5th place domestically, the Champions League was basically the only thing keeping this 2025-26 season alive.

Slot needed a massive reaction, and the boys delivered straight from the jump. Liverpool set this frantic, suffocating tempo, feeding off an Anfield crowd that was absolutely deafening (helped by the fact that away fans were banned).

The breakthrough finally came in the 25th minute from Dominik Szoboszlai. After a cheeky corner routine, the Hungarian was just lurking on the edge of the box and absolutely smashed a cushioned finish past Ugurcan Cakir to level the aggregate.

From there, Galatasaray’s game plan totally fell apart. Their main man, Victor Osimhen, picked up a nasty wrist injury after clashing in the air with Ibou Konate. He tried to tough it out until half-time but eventually had to be swapped for Leroy Sane.

But right before the break, Liverpool almost threw. Ismail Jakobs clumsily hacked down Szoboszlai in the box, giving Mo Salah a penalty. Unbelievably, Salah stepped up and hit this weak, central shot that Cakir easily swatted away. You could literally hear the collective groan from lounge rooms all the way from Sydney to Perth.

The 11-Minute Blitz That Ended It

If you thought that missed pen was going to haunt them in the sheds, the second half completely shut that down. The Reds came out of the tunnel and absolutely blew the Turkish champs off the park in an 11-minute blitz.

Salah, clearly raging about his missed penalty, carved open the Galatasaray defense in the 51st minute with a ridiculous pass to Hugo Ekitike. The Frenchman, who was brought into the starting XI specifically for this game, finished it ice-cold.

Literally 120 seconds later, Anfield went off again. Salah took a shot, Cakir parried it, and Ryan Gravenberch was right there to smash the rebound home. Blink, and it was 3-0 on the night.

The absolute peak of the match happened in the 62nd minute. Linking up with Florian Wirtz, Salah grabbed a cheeky backheel from the German and curled a vintage, top-bins finish into the corner. That wasn't just any goal—it was Salah’s 50th in the Champions League, making him the first African player in history to hit that milestone. Legend status.

That Gruesome Noa Lang Injury

While the scoreline was already a nightmare for Galatasaray, things took a genuinely horrible turn in the 75th minute.

Winger Noa Lang was in a standard touchline tussle with Curtis Jones, lost his balance, and stumbled into the Anfield digital advertising boards. His thumb got awkwardly jammed in the heavy boards, and bro, it was a nasty, bloodied mess. Play was stopped for ages while the medics rushed the pitch. He was stretchered off in serious agony, and their manager Okan Buruk later confirmed Lang was rushed straight to the hospital for emergency surgery. Just a brutal end to a miserable away trip.

🇫🇷 Up Next: The PSG Revenge Mission

For the Aussie punters holding outright tickets on Liverpool to win the lot, those odds just got a lot shorter. But their reward for this masterclass? A terrifying quarter-final clash against PSG starting April 9th.

Slot’s men are going to be out for blood. PSG dumped Liverpool out on penalties in the Round of 16 last season, and the Parisians are absolutely flying right now (they literally just pumped Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate). It’s going to be an absolute movie.

FAQs

Q. Wait, so what was the final score?

A. Liverpool battered them 4-0 at Anfield. They were down 1-0 from the first leg, so they took the tie 4-1 on aggregate.

Q. Did Salah actually score after missing the pen?

A. Yeah, man. He missed a sitter of a penalty right before half-time but bounced back to get an assist and bang in a worldie for their fourth goal. That was his historic 50th UCL goal.

Q. Who do they play next?

A. They've got Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the quarter-finals. Massive revenge game after PSG knocked them out last year.

Q. What the hell happened to Noa Lang?

A. Freak accident in the 75th minute. Tripped near the sideline and got his thumb trapped in the digital advertising boards. It was a severe cut, and he had to be stretchered off straight to the hospital. Nasty stuff.

Q. Where do I actually stream the UCL in Australia?

A. Stan Sport holds the exclusive broadcast rights for the 2025-26 Champions League in Aus. You might hear the lads bantering about it on Optus Sport, but Stan is where you actually watch the live games. Always double-check your local guides just in case.

When their backs were totally against the wall, Liverpool remembered who they were. That 4-0 thrashing wasn't just about surviving; it was a massive statement of intent. If they keep pressing like that and finishing their dinner, they are still one of the scariest teams on the planet.
